Description
A shankh is considered auspicious and its sound calls for peace, prosperity and luck in the home. Shankh or shankham in Sanskrit means shum, which means something good, and kham means water. Shankham literally means ‘the conch that contains sacred water’. It is thought that the divinities reside within the conch. Varun Dev is seated at the centre of the conch, Brahma is behind and Ganga and Saraswati are at the front. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu (Lord Krishna), in his diverse avatars, blows the conch to destroy negativity in the world. Shankh is the symbol of Vishnu and it is holy in Hinduism and Buddhism. In the Mahabharata, Lord Krishna and the five Pandavas each possessed a conch.
