The Garuda Purana is one of the 18 Mahapuran within Hinduism. It includes the instructions of Lord Maha Vishnu given to Sri Garuda (King of Birds and one Vahana of Lord Vishnu). In this ancient text, Lord Vishnu reveals the meaning of Life, the appropriate funeral rites, the details of life after death and the reincarnation of the deceased soul. According to Garud Puran, the appropriate funerary rites must be carried out at the time of Antim Sanskar (Antyesti) of the deceased. It is a Vaishnava Purana which includes 19,000 Shlokas. It is further divided into two other parts, namely Purva Khanda (part 1) and Uttara Khanda (part 2). Garud Purana’s second part explains the topic Life after death.
